Proper Disposal of Prescription Drugs

stacks_image_13C34525-1B67-4CE3-ACAB-EEAF09F83A46
Have you ever taken a prescription drug out of your cabinet only to find it has expired? Now what? Flush them down the toilet?

What is the safest option?

In the past we have always been told to just flush expired prescriptions and medications in the toilet or sink. We now realize however, that medications being disposed of via toilet or sink are finding its way into our public water supply and harming our environment.

So, if we can't flush expired medicine, what can we do to ensure they're properly disposed of?

The Office of National Drug Control Policy recommends the following:

1. Take your prescription drugs out of their original containers.

2. Mix drugs with an undesirable substance, such as cat litter or used coffee grounds. This will make the medication less appealing to children and pets, and unrecognizable to people who may intentionally go through your trash.

3. Put the mixture into a disposable container with a lid, such as an empty margarine tub, or into a sealable bag.

4. Conceal or remove any personal information, including Rx number, on the empty containers by covering it with black permanent marker or duct tape, or by scratching it off.

5. Place the sealed container with the mixture, and the empty drug containers, in the trash.

When in doubt about proper disposal, talk to your pharmacist.

GO Diabetes!

The Okeene Medical Clinic is excited about a recent diabetes management program called GO! Diabetes Practice Enrichment. This unique project will encourage implementing practice changes for improved patient outcomes. The GO! Diabetes Practice Enrichment Program is an eight-month pilot project launched in May of 2010 by the Oklahoma and Georgia Academy of Family Physicians and is being funded by an educational grant from sanofi-aventis. The Okeene Medical Clinic was nominated to participate in this program, a true honor and wonderful opportunity for our physicians and diabetic patients.

By participating in the program the Okeene Clinic physicians will learn more about helping patients take a more active role in their diabetes management in all aspects of their healthcare, not just the treatment of the diabetes itself. Many times other health related issues are not managed along with diabetes such as eye exams or foot care. By implementing a new report card system the physician and patient can chart the patients progress and identify areas of improvement, therefore allowing the patient a more active roll in the management of their healthcare.

The Okeene Clinic looks forward to working with our patients in new and improved healthcare services.
