Price Transparency

CMS's hospital price transparency requirements are authorized by section 2718(e) of the Public Health Service Act, which requires each hospital operating in the United States to make its standard charges public. The regulation requires displaying several types of standard charges, in a single readable file, including:

  • Gross charges of all individual items and services for which the hospital has established a charge;

  • Discounted cash prices;

  • Specific charges negotiated between the hospital and third-party payers, if applicable.

Good Faith Estimates are available by request. Estimates may not include the professional fees for the physician, surgeon, radiologist, pathologist, anesthesiologist, or nurse practitioner.
